| My Flat |
Sorry to take so long to get in touch with some of you, we only just got the net put in at the flat and even then it can be pretty temperamental. Laura if u get the iMessage app it'll be a lot easier for me to message you! We have facebook now too, had to pay for it though.
So anyway I might be repeating myself at times but here goes.......
The flights were good, slept most of the way. Then we had a nice 10hr wait in Guangzhou airport which surprisingly also flew by, we were able to plug in the laptop and watch some shows and nap some more. We were then met by a tiny Chinese girl called Alice, she told me I was very beautiful so I instantly liked her haha although I defo was not feeling pretty after 36hrs of travelling!
The flats are nice, although I think we were lucky as one of the other teachers place was filthy and crawling with cockroaches and piles of rat poo! I've seen two cockroaches in my room so far, both in my wardrobe so now I hate picking out my clothes! Saw a couple of rats in the road, there's no street lights here so I'm paranoid one is going to run over my feet.
The school is good, however I'm not in kindergarten as I was originally told. One girl who was meant to be in the primary section couldn't make it so we had to Have an interview with the principle and they chose me, god only knows why! So I'm teaching grade two (8yrolds) which means I have to plan proper lessons rather than just play games. I'm getting an extra £250 a month though so it's worth it and I still only work 5hrs a day, 14x40min lessons a week and the rest office hrs. I taught my first class yesterday, i thought it went well :) the time flew by, however my co-teacher (Chinese Barry) said I have to spk louder and be more strict! Apparently I'm far too nice and cute! Ha.
The other teachers are all canny, wide range of ages and characters. There's about 15 of us and we all tend to stick together when going out n about. The first night we went to the local pub, called the beast. it was westernised so thought we'd found a good place to hangout. We went back the next night but it was closed and apparently won't be opening again :( we found another bar called LA, it's good but more popular with the Chinese. I think we'll have to head into Guangzhou for a proper night out.
Had to go for the dreaded medical today and it was just as bad as described, we had to get the bus at 6am which took us to the hospital in the city. We had also attempted this the day before, however we arrived too late so we were allowed to just look around the city for a bit. It looks good from what I saw, there's a Zara and a mango but apparently they only have tiny sizes like I thought!
Anyway we got to the hospital for half 7 and had to wait in a string of different queues to get prodded and poked, I had no idea what each doctor was planning to do to me and their machines look a lot different to ours. I had to wee on demand and one lady made me get my boobs out! Horrified haha.
I ate my first full Chinese school meal today, probably out of hunger as a lot of the dinners look a little questionable. They tend to consist of the same thing everyday; a bowl of rice, a bowl of veg and a bowl of meat, you get a bowl of dishwater with every meal too haha their version of soup! The first day I nearly choked on a bone, they don't seem to believe in removing them before or after cooking. Todays dinner was pretty nice though so maybe I'm getting used to it :) yesterday I had noodles for breakfast, they were tasty just not my cup of tea at 7am!
I just read it all back and it sounds like a nightmare haha but I'm actually quite enjoying it all and I can't wait to start planning some adventures!
